CHAPTER 1 - SHARING YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION
Note: We used Wingate 3.0.4 . Any newer versions and other 3.x versions
should have similar layouts and instructions!
1) Download or Buy Wingate from Deerfield
.
2) Copy the Wingate Installation Program to your other computers on
your network, using Network Neighborhood. You should now have at
least 2 of these install files.
3) Install Wingate on your Server.
4) Use Wingate Standard edition.
5) Follow the rest of setup. If you are asked to reboot, reboot.
6) In your task bar you should now see the wingate task bar logo. Picture.
7) Wingate is now installed on your server.
8) On your client computers, go to Wingate Install. Make sure that Wingate
detects your server computer and make sure it wants to make your other
computers the client. If it doesn't detect, still make these computers
the client.
9) If you are asked to reboot, do so.
10) At this point, you should be able to surf the net on all of your
PC's. If you are not able to, make sure your network is working. If it
is, go to Wingate (using the task bar), and make sure no settings have
an X on them. Contact Wingate or use there Program Help for further config.
CHAPTER 2 - ADDING A MAC USING OPEN TRANSPORT TO THE
WINGATE INTERNET SERVER
1) Each program has to be configured manually. However make sure that
the following services work in Gatekeeper.
FTP
LogFile
Pop3
Real Audio
Socks
Telnet
VDOLive
WWW
2) Move to Program Setup (Chapter 4) for how to setup each program on
the internet.
CHAPTER 3 - ADDING A MAC USING MacTCP TO THE WINGATE
INTERNET SERVER
1) Apple Macintosh System before 7.6.5 come with MacTCP. To upgrade
to System 7.6.5, contact your friendly Apple Mac dealer.
2) Once installed, make sure you have Apple Talk activated. Click
on the Apple icon from the menu bar and select
Chooser. Activate Apple Talk by selecting
the appropriate check box.
3) You will now need to switch the network across from LocalTalk to
EtherTalk.
To do this, click the Apple icon from the menu bar. Select
Control Panel and then double click on the Network
icon. Now click on the EtherTalk icon
to switch from LocalTalk.
Trouble Shooting: If for some reason, EtherTalk can't be activated,
then it is most likely that you have a hardware problem with either your
network card, network cable or your network points.
4) Now go back to your Control Panel folder
and double click the MacTCP icon.
5) When you see this folder, click on the
Ethernet icon.
6) .Press the more button. You will now see this
folder (click here).
7) In the Obtain Address section, click on Manually. Now in the IP Address
section, select Class "C".
8) Set the subnet to 255.255.255.0
9) Set Gateway IP address as 192.168.0.1
10) Set the DNS to the IP address of the WinGate gateway machine. In
most cases this would be 192.168.0.1
11) Don't worry if you can't set the IP number of this machine at this
stage. Close this window (I think Mac users call them Folders).
21) Once the above window (folder) is closed, you can now go ahead and
set the IP number for your machine simply by typing in the IP number in
the appropriate section.(See here). In our case,
this machine has been set to, 192.168.0.5 Other machines on the network
will differ by their last digit. For example, the machine either side of
it might be 192.168.0.6 and 192.168.0.4
13) The next thing to do is to configure your client software. This
process is similar to setting up clients for the Windows platform. Note
however, in the client setup with Macs, simply replace the word gateway
with the IP number of the gateway machine (which in many cases will be
192.168.0.1) This is because I haven't worked out where the hosts file
is located on the Macintosh computers. :-(
14) Once you have launched an application that uses the TCP/IP stack(eg
Netscape), you can test your network by pinging this machine from your
Windows gateway. (On the Windows machine, go to the Dos prompt and type
in ping 192.168.0.5). If you get a reply, then it's working.
15) Pat yourself on the back !
CHAPTER 4 - SETUP OF NEW SERVICES.
On my Wingate, I have created my own services for Macs. To do this,
right click and create a new service. Choose what you want to make, and
add + 1 to each, ie HTTPS/WWW = 80 now =81. Make sure you disable Disconnect
after 60 seconds. If you make your own servers, make the correct adjustments
for each program.
CHAPTER 5 - SETUP OF PC COMPUTERS IF NOT USING WGIC
1) Follow the instructions for the PC Programs in Chapter 11. Most programs
have similar Proxy Setup Configs.
2) If the program does not have Firewall or Proxy support, you can't
use the program without extra help. Please e-mail
Adam.
CHAPTER 6 - SETUP OF INTERNET PROGRAMS NOT USING
WGIC
Note: WGIC is default in all Windows 95,98 and Me. The following
should not have to be done, but can be, if you don't want to use the WGIC
or for some reason your WGIC doesn't work!
Note: If for some reason you have changed your ports (due to conflict)
please make the correct adjustments for each setting.
Note: My computer has Wingate Server running on 192.168.0.1 , thus
that is what I have told you to use. However if it is another IP address,
please make the correct adjustments for each setting.
Note: If the program I am using is older or newer than the version
you are using, don't worry, the settings still work. The only differences
is you have to manually find your proxy setup section of the program. Furthermore,
PC's and MAC's have layouts that are rather the same or will have the same
idea when setting up.
